Mother-Daughter Duo Make History with Double Golden Gloves Victory

In a groundbreaking moment for Australian boxing, Amanda and Maia Laird, an incredible mother-daughter duo, both claimed victory at the 2025 New Zealand Golden Gloves in Tauranga, each earning the prestigious title in their respective divisions on the same night.
This marks the first time in International Golden Gloves history that a mother and daughter have both secured titles on the same evening, despite other family duos attempting the challenge in past years.
The Golden Gloves is one of the most prestigious amateur boxing tournaments, showcasing top-tier talent from across New Zealand and Australia. Known for its high level of competition and long-standing tradition, the event is a proving ground for rising stars and seasoned fighters, often serving as a stepping stone to national and international success.
Amanda and Maia are core members of Fortitude Boxing Gym in Brisbane, where they train under the guidance of head coach Erik “The Viking” Sokolov, alongside Stephen Deller and “Lightning” Luke Meldon. Their shared win is a testament not only to their dedication and grit, but also to the supportive community that drives Fortitude’s fighters to achieve greatness.
