The Golden Girl Takes Home The Win on Opetaia Undercard
Fortitude’s Golden Girl, Mariah Turner, delivered another standout performance on June 8th, 2025, on the undercard of the world title bout between Jai Opetaia and Claudio Squeo. Mariah claimed the Australian Featherweight Title with a points victory over former national champion Leah Reuben. The judges scored the contest 80–72, 77–75, and 77–75, acknowledging Turner’s control and composure across eight hard-fought rounds.
After a last minute opponent change, Mariah rose to the challenge with the same poise and preparation that has defined her breakout year. This marks her third fight in as many months which is a testament to her work ethic, discipline, and hunger to climb the ranks of Australian.
Behind Turner’s success stands a strong team. Her coach, “Lightning” Luke Meldon, who has also trained notable fighters such as Jake “The Machine” Wyllie, Jarrod Fletcher and Fagaia “Django” Opelu but to mention a few. Luke continues to sharpen The Golden Girl’s skills. Mariah’s manager, Stephen Deller at Fortitude Boxing Gym, provides invaluable support and guidance inside and outside the ring.
Speaking ahead of the fight during pre-bout interviews, Mariah shared what it meant to fight on such a prestigious card alongside a world champion.
“(Jai Opetaia is) a massive inspiration not only to myself but to our Polynesian communities, it sets that standard of what we can achieve and that we’re not just a minority.” - Mariah Turner via DAZN
The fight itself unfolded in front of a ferocious crowd, unusually loud and electric for an undercard fight. A sea of blue filled the stands in support of Mariah, creating an atmosphere that felt more like a main event than a preliminary bout. From the opening bell, Turner set the tone with her early rounds being her strongest, landing clean, powerful shots that echoed through the arena. Leah Reuben showed immense heart, absorbing the hits like a true warrior, but Mariah kept the pressure on, staying composed and relentless throughout the eight rounds, and ultimately taking that title home.
After the bout, Turner expressed gratitude and reflected on the moment via Instagram Stories:
“Grateful for the opportunity to showcase my skills on the biggest platform last night! Now for some much needed down time with my family because it has been a while.” - Mariah Turner ( Instagram @mariahturner___)
With the green and gold Australian Championship belt around her waist and her community behind her, Mariah Turner continues to rise not just as a boxer, but as a role model for what’s possible.
Fortitude Boxing Gym is incredibly proud of Mariah. Her dedication, discipline, and drive continue to inspire everyone around her. This title is a testament to the work she puts in every day, and we can’t wait to see what she achieves next.
